Just a real treat this summer, I am totally lost for words over this new high school comedy! Popular Serizawa Acts Weird around Me officially premiered on August 11, 2026, and it already feels like such a fresh take on the classic “popular guy meets loner” setup. If you loved the warm, wholesome feeling of School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close to or the hilarious energy of At 25:00, in Akasaka, you are going to love this one!
The BL series follows Hajime Suzuki (Kohsaku Koizumi), a shy and socially awkward fudanshi who secretly writes BL light novels. His main character is modeled after the school’s golden-retriever-energy heartthrob, Haruto Serizawa (Ryoto Shisaka). But everything changes when Serizawa accidentally comes across Suzuki’s draft. Disaster!
Instead of making fun of Suzuki or exposing his secret to the rest of the class, Serizawa becomes his biggest fan. He keeps complimenting Suzuki’s writing and seems to find every possible opportunity to get closer to him.
Popular Serizawa Acts Weird around Me: Episodes 1-2 Review
I was hooked from Episode 1 because I could immediately feel Suzuki’s panic. Kohsaku Koizumi perfectly captures the confusion of Suzuki’s inner thoughts, while Ryoto Shisaka is just full of sunshine and charm as Serizawa. When Serizawa reads Suzuki’s novel draft and genuinely acknowledges his passion for writing, it is nothing but pure serotonin. I was especially delighted when Serizawa carried Suzuki on his back without the slightest bit of embarrassment.
In Episode 2, things get even more hilarious! I could hardly stop laughing at Suzuki sitting in the middle of lunch with his head almost touching Serizawa’s legs while continuing to write his next chapter. Serizawa is so energetic that he cannot help replaying Suzuki’s adorable reactions whenever they get close, while his friends are left completely bewildered by what they are seeing.
The opening theme song, "Aiai Ai Nante” by ITARU, perfectly sets up the show’s optimistic and youthful vibe. The whole atmosphere feels incredibly relatable to anyone who has ever dabbled in fanfiction.
Episode 2 Cliffhanger
The episode 2 ends with Serizawa making a bold move that leaves Suzuki completely flustered. Later that afternoon, Serizawa spends some time with Suzuki on the couch, helping him brainstorm a new scene for his next novel. But this time, their writing session feels a lot more intimate than usual.
Suzuki slowly realizes that Serizawa is not just entertaining himself with the BL story. Serizawa actually wants to become the main character in Suzuki’s own love story.
The cliffhanger sets up a hilarious turnaround for the episodes ahead. Suzuki is already running out of time to finish his book, and now he might also be running out of time to avoid falling in love himself.
Popular Serizawa Acts Weird around Me: Episodes 1-2 Verdict
I really like the main duo, but there are still a few things that could be improved. The supporting characters feel a little weak at the moment. Most of Haruto’s friends, Tomoaki Takeuchi (Kaiki Kimura), Yuma Saeki (Shotaro Tanaka), and Shun Iwasaki (Yuki Hayama), mostly feel like a loud background group right now. I also hope Hajime’s friend Shota Matsuno (Yoneo Kento) gets a proper arc and does not remain in the background as the story continues.
The pacing slows down a little during the second half of Episode 2, but I think the slower pace is doing a good job of setting up some potential drama for the future.
Still, my overall impression after the first two episodes is a huge thumbs-up. I am already counting down the days until next week because this is exactly the kind of fluffy, funny romance I needed on my watchlist!
